Costuming

Costuming plays a tremendous role in folk and character dancing. As a dance educator, I find it extremely important that costumes are authentic, well researched, and culturally appropriate.

Costuming Knowledge:
  • During my undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta I minored in Ukrainian Folklore.
  • I studied the nuance, diversity, and richness of Ukrainian folk costuming.
  • While living in Ukraine I continued my research expanding my knowledge to include Moldavian, Polish, Russian and Belorussia traditional wear.
  • I have an extensive personal library of costuming books.

Important Tips:
  • When staging folk and character dances authentic costuming and music are just as important as the choreography.
  • Adaptations and modifications are made for the stage.
  • These modifications bridge the past with the present and the village with the stage.
  • I provide my students with culturally appropriate costuming by using my own resources and working with costume designers in Eastern Europe.
I have designed countless authentic folk costumes and am happy to provide professional consultation and expertise to those seeking to stage folk and character numbers.
